Koh Phayam or Koh Chang (Ranong): Which Island Fits Your Travel Style?

Sunset over a beach on Koh Phayam in Ranong

Koh Phayam is usually the easier choice for travellers who want a quiet island with more accommodation and everyday services. Koh Chang in Ranong suits visitors who actively want a simpler, more remote stay and can plan around limited facilities.

First, make sure you are researching the right Koh Chang. This guide covers Koh Chang in Ranong, not the larger island of the same name in Trat near Cambodia.

Choose Koh Phayam for an easier first island stay

Koh Phayam remains relaxed, but it has a wider range of places to stay, eat and arrange local transport. Tourism Authority of Thailand information highlights beaches such as Ao Yai and Buffalo Bay, along with mangroves and kayaking.

It suits couples, solo travellers and families who want beach time without giving up every practical convenience. You still need to confirm power, internet, road access and payment options with the specific accommodation.

Koh Phayam also works better when the trip is short. More frequent transport choices can make arrival and departure planning less fragile, although schedules remain seasonal and weather dependent.

Choose Koh Chang Ranong for a quieter, simpler trip

Koh Chang in Ranong is less developed. TAT's Ranong material describes a landscape of forest, small farms and local community life, with fewer services than Koh Phayam.

That simplicity is the point for some travellers. It can suit a longer, slower stay where reading, walking and quiet beach time matter more than restaurant choice or a busy itinerary.

Confirm the basics before booking:

  • when electricity is available;
  • whether mobile coverage and Wi-Fi meet your needs;
  • where meals are served;
  • whether the property accepts cards;
  • how bags reach the accommodation; and
  • which boat operates on your dates.

Do not assume that a basic island stay will suit young children, remote work or travellers with mobility needs.

Compare the atmosphere

Koh Phayam has more visitor infrastructure but does not feel like a large resort island. Different beaches have different moods, so check the location of an accommodation rather than choosing from the island name alone.

Koh Chang Ranong feels more isolated. Nights may be darker and quieter, and choices can be limited. Travellers who enjoy that simplicity may prefer it. Others may find the lack of options inconvenient after a day or two.

Plan access before booking rooms

Both islands are reached by boat from the Ranong area. Departure pier, boat type, journey time and seasonal frequency can change. Confirm directly with the operator and your accommodation.

For Koh Chang Ranong, ask whether the boat stops at a shared pier or a beach near the property. For Koh Phayam, check how you will continue from the arrival pier to the chosen beach.

Do not place a flight immediately after the return boat. Weather or operating changes can disrupt the connection. The Ranong transport guide explains the mainland side of the journey, while the Koh Phayam transit guide covers that island in more detail.

Think about season and sea conditions

Ranong has a long wet season. Boat services and accommodation availability may reduce when conditions are poor. Reconfirm close to travel and follow operator safety decisions.

A quiet beach is not automatically safe for swimming. Look for local warnings, currents and weather changes. Ask the accommodation which beaches are appropriate under current conditions.

Which island should you book?

Choose Koh Phayam when you want a relaxed beach trip with more choice and a simpler arrival. Choose Koh Chang Ranong when remoteness is a positive part of the holiday and you are comfortable confirming limited services in advance.

If the island connection is uncertain, an overnight stay in Ranong can protect the schedule. Blu Monkey Hub & Hotel Ranong is a town base, not an island resort; check its official rooms page if you need a mainland night before or after the crossing.
